As nature trails go this is one of our favorites along the Natchez. It’s just a little over 1/2 a mile. The scenery is as diverse as it is beautiful, and you get a chance to take a stepping stone path across a stream. What more can you ask for!

We left the parking lot and took the gravel path .1 mile…

alongside pretty little streams that played back and forth across the path before we reached Colbert’s Creek.

Here we crossed the creek using the elevated stepping stones and I have to admit, the little girl in me had quite a lot of fun doing this!
From here the trail makes a loop. We followed the trail to the right where it climbs a small hill through the forest.

This is where I had my first real health scare on the road.
As we ascended the little hill I suddenly had a few sharp pains in my chest that were strong enough to stop me in my tracks. Those of you who follow our story already know that I am in the early stages of the heart disease atherosclerosis.

We rested for a short while at the bench at the top of the hill and then continued our walk back down the hill and toward Rock Spring.

The information sign there explained how the underground aquifer touches the surface forming this crystal clear spring that flows year round with a constant temperature of 59 degrees (Fahrenheit).
We meandered along the edge of the spring watching the minnows and looking for larger fish.

Suddenly we realized that we were looking right past a large beaver dam that was staring us right in the face!
We scanned the area in search of the lodge without any success. We remembered that the informational sign at the beginning of the trail mentioned that dams have been built and destroyed by flood waters in this area since 1977. Whether this was an old dam with it’s lodge destroyed long ago, or a new one in which we lacked a keen beaver lodge spotting eye we will never know. Either way, we were thrilled to see our first dam up close and personal.

We made our way back across the bridge and to the parking lot and even though I was a little worse from the wear spotting a beaver dam made it all worth the while.
Next stop Glenrock Branch, where I take a break from walking and Mr. McGee gets control of the camera.
Until then…
